Chapter 32

Grace

“That,” Nadine said decisively, pointing at a cute red dress in the window of one of the shops. She grabbed my arm. “Come on, you have to try it on.”

I snorted. “What would I need a dress like that for?” I asked, trying to pull away from her. Not that there was anything wrong with trying on things, but I had long since learned not to encourage Nadine while we were out shopping or else I’d be coming home with bags full of things that I didn’t need. If I tried that dress on, I was certain I’d be walking out of the store with it.

Nadine rolled her eyes. “You’re in the business world now,” she reminded me. “You got dragged along to at least one business dinner while you were in Chicago, didn’t you?”

“Not on this trip,” I said, but I eyed the dress speculatively. There might be future trips where I would be dragged out to dinners with Caden. Heck, he might even drag me out to a dinner or two here in Florida.

Work dinners, not dates. I felt a pang in my chest at that.

I knew that keeping things strictly professional between Caden and me was for the best. That wasn’t what I’d meant when I told him that we couldn’t have anything more than ‘this,’ though. I just meant that it had to be just sex and work for now. That we couldn’t start dating, that we couldn’t let our feelings get involved. It had stung to hear him say that. Had he already lost interest in me? Did he suddenly remember the fact that I had a daughter, and realize that he wanted nothing to do with me? I didn’t know what it was really about, but the rest of the week had been strictly professional. And I had no one else but myself to blame for it.

He was still nice to me, and he still brought me coffee mid-morning, at least when he wasn’t in meetings. We’d had lunch together on Friday. I didn’t catch his burning, speculative gaze on me anymore, though. He didn’t look like he was undressing me in his mind, or like he was even remotely interested in me anymore.

I sighed, and Nadine looked concerned. “If you really don’t want to try it on, you don’t have to,” she said. “I just thought that maybe a certain boss of yours might appreciate seeing you in something other than office wear for dinners out.”

“I’ll try it on, but I’m not buying it,” I said, even though I knew Nadine would probably talk me into it anyway. Maybe he would like to see me in this. It wouldn’t be professional for me to
